It is important to carefully select a Jira project key that will meet your long-term requirements when initially creating the project, rather than relying on updating it later. However, there may be instances where you need to modify the key for an existing project, such as a change in product name.
There may be implications when changing the project key, such as breaking existing links, workflows, customizations, or existing app integrations.
